Corbelling

Corbelling is the original method of making arches: a series of stones or bricks that protrude beyond the lower level to finally cover the arch. Corbels are also used to support cornices, turrets, brackets, and oriel windows. A corbel is also a a stone or piece of wood that supports a superincumbent weight.
